Switchgear vs Distribution Cabinet: What Overseas Buyers Should Clarify
Technical comparison of switchgear and distribution cabinets for buyers preparing RFQs, SLD drawings, and project procurement packages.
The terms are often used differently
In international procurement, switchgear usually refers to equipment that includes switching, protection, control, metering, and isolation functions. Distribution cabinet can be used more broadly for power distribution panels at different levels of a facility.
The buyer should avoid relying on the label alone and instead define voltage, current, protection, enclosure, incoming and outgoing feeder configuration, and standard compliance.
Quotation data should be engineering-based
For both switchgear and distribution cabinets, suppliers need the single line diagram, load schedule, installation condition, local frequency, and component brand requirements.
If the buyer expects IEC or BS compliance, that requirement should be stated before cabinet design is finalized.
How to reduce specification risk
Use a parameter confirmation table, ask for a drawing review, and request FAT documentation before shipment. This keeps procurement, engineering, and site teams aligned.
